It Is Finished

John 19:30 – “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar (pertained to the moistening of the lips and tongue, which had dried up because of the loss of body fluid; most probably He asked for this in order that He might speak the last words), He said, It is finished (proclaims the greatest Words, albeit at great price, that any sinner could ever hear; in effect, the world’s debt was paid; every iota of the Law had been fulfilled): and He bowed His Head, and gave up the ghost (Jesus did not die from His Wounds; He freely gave up His Life, in fact, dying when the Holy Spirit told Him to die [Heb. 9:14]).”

When one reads the Book of John one is filled with awe and wonder at the Words spoken by our Lord. Truly, “No man spoke like this Man” (Jn. 7:46). He spoke Words of Life, Hope, Deliverance, Power, and Prophecy. When He spoke, lepers were cleansed, blinded eyes were opened, the crippled walked, the hungry were fed, the dead were raised to life, and storms became calm. To the self-righteous, His Words brought a stinging rebuke but to a woman publicly shamed, His Words brought Salvation as He said, “Neither do I condemn you: go, and sin no more” (Jn. 8:11).
John’s Gospel gives to us some of the most beautiful and powerful statements of Christ. Let’s look at some of them for a moment.
John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have Everlasting Life.”
John 4:13-14: “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again. But whosoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst.”
John 6:35: “I am the Bread of Life.”
John 8:12: “I am the Light of the World.”
John 10:9: “I am the Gate.”
John 10:11: “I am the Good Shepherd.”
John 11:25: “I am the Resurrection and the Life.”
John 14:6: “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”
John 15:1: “I am the True Vine.”
John 11:43: “Lazarus, come forth.”
John 11:44: “Loose him, and let him go.”
John 8:32: “You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall make you free.”
John 7:37: “If any many thirst, let him come unto Me and drink.”

One could go on and on, for truly His Words are the only words ever spoken in history that matter. However, I personally believe the greatest Words ever spoken by Christ were the last Words He uttered on Calvary’s Cross, “IT IS FINISHED!”

No more innocent lambs would ever have to be sacrificed for “IT IS FINISHED.”

No longer would anyone have to travel to Jerusalem, for “IT IS FINISHED.”

No longer would the priest be needed to place a lamb upon the Altar, for our Great High Priest said, “IT IS FINISHED.”

No longer would man struggle to keep laws he couldn’t keep because the Law-keeper said, “IT IS FINISHED.”

It means the following:

  • All Scripture concerning Christ’s Sufferings was fulfilled (Isa., Chpt. 53).
  • Satan was defeated (Jn. 12:31-33).
  • The Middle Wall of Partition separating Jews and Gentiles was ripped asunder (Rom. 10:11-12; Eph. 2:14-18).
  • We now can have access to the Throne of God (Heb. 4:16, 10:19).
  • The Reign of Death is cancelled (Rom. 5:12-21).
  • The power of sin was broken (Rom., Chpt. 6).
  • Salvation from sin, any and all sin (Heb. 9:11-14).
  • Peace between God and man was restored (Rom. 5:1-11).
  • The Full Justice of God was satisfied (Rom. 3:21-26).
  • Healing for the body, soul, and mind (Isa. 53:4-5; Jn. 10:10; James 5:14-16).
  • The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the lives of all of God’s People (Jn. 14:15-17; Acts 1:4-8, 2:33).
  • Blotting out the handwriting of Ordinances that was against us (Col. 2:13-15).

IT IS FINISHED, never again will Christ have to come and die on Calvary’s Cross for it was a complete Work. “IT IS FINISHED.”

In closing, Bill Gaither summed it all up with these lyrics:

There’s a line that is drawn through the Ages;
On that line stands an Old Rugged Cross.
On that Cross a battle is raging
For the gain of a man’s soul or its loss.

On one side march the forces of evil,
All the demons all the devils of Hell;
On the other the Angels of Glory,
And they meet on Golgotha’s Hill.

The Earth shakes with the force of the conflict;
And the sun refuses to shine,
For there hangs God’s Son in the balance,
And then through the darkness He cries –

It is finished! The battle is over.
It is finished! There’ll be no more war.
It is finished! The end of the conflict.
It is finished! And Jesus is Lord.
