Article: Why is the Preaching of the Cross Hated by the Church?

Galatians 2:20 – “I am crucified with Christ (as the Foundation of all Victory; Paul, here, takes us back to Rom. 6:3-5):  nevertheless I live (have new life); yet not I (not by my own strength and ability), but Christ lives in me (by virtue of me dying with Him on the Cross, and being raised with Him in Newness of Life):  and the life which I now live in the flesh (my daily walk before God) I live by the Faith of the Son of God (the Cross is ever the Object of my Faith), Who loved me, and gave Himself for me (which is the only way that I could be Saved).”

If one is diligent they will notice that Paul in this Verse begins with the Cross: “I am crucified with Christ,” and it ends with the Cross: “Who loved me, and gave Himself for me.”
Never forget Calvary was the greatest day in human history.  Everything, as it regards Salvation and all the benefits the Lord has willed for us, come exclusively through what Christ did on Calvary’s Cross. Therefore, the preaching of the Cross should be the foundation of every message that is preached, but, sad to say, religious man attempts to improve on what the Lord has already done.  They resort to preaching psychology, self-help, comedy, and even plain old worldly presentations calling it the Gospel.
Recently, one preacher referred to our preaching of the Cross as “Greasy Grace.” Now, let me be blunt, that man is a fool and in my opinion is edging close to blasphemy. There is nothing greasy about Grace. That statement shows how little he knows about Grace and how much He needs Grace.
Today in the Church there is a growing hostility towards the Message of the Cross. Why is that? The answer is the following.

The Cross reveals the true heart of man as it regards sin. Paul said in Romans 6:17, “But God be thanked, that you were servants of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of Doctrine which was delivered to you.” Notice that it begins in the past tense, “you were the servants of sin.”  We were slaves to sin, but at Calvary, Jesus Christ paid the price to deliver humanity from sin. You can’t stand at the foot of the Cross Spiritually speaking and deny who and what we are.
To better explain this Verse the word “delivered” in the Greek Text is somewhat different in how it is normally used. The Greek Text says it this way, “the form of Doctrine into which you were delivered.”
He is actually saying that the Believer was delivered into the “form of Doctrine,” that is in Salvation.  The Doctrine of Salvation is all in the Cross, not works, not good deeds, but one coming to Calvary’s Cross and admitting they are a sinner and accepting the precious atoning Blood of Jesus Christ as the only means of Salvation.

Paul said in Galatians 2:21, “I do not frustrate the Grace of God:  for if Righteousness come by the Law, then Christ died in vain.”  All false doctrine constitutes some form of man-made doctrine or law that is false and does not lead man close to Christ but away from Christ.  All false doctrine deviates from the Cross in some way. Let me make it simple, if it’s not the Cross, it’s false doctrine.

Paul said in Romans 8:3, “For what the Law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His Own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh (doesn’t mean Christ was sinful but fully human, conformed in the appearance of flesh, which is characterized by sin, yet He was sinless), and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh.”

Religious man loves to feed the flesh:  sinful man in vice and religious man through his supposed good works.  Religious man loves religious pomp and ceremony, but the Word plainly says, whether the law of Moses, which preachers are trying to bring back into the Church, which is a sin for the Law has been done away with and a new and better Covenant has taken its place.  But, Paul says if you try to keep the Law, whether the Law of Moses or man-made doctrines, or denominational rules that are not Scriptural, “you are fallen from Grace” (Gal. 5:4).
Yes, the Cross is hated by some preachers, but as for me, I like what the great Hymn of the Church says, “I will cling to the old rugged Cross,” and so should you.

Your Evangelist,
Donnie Swaggart

This message is very crucial to the body of Christ. It’s a crying shame how far we have blindly fallen! When we can gnash our teeth at the fire truth and validity of the gospel and especially the cross. Which symbolizes our only hope of salvation. There is a serious problem with the western side of this earth. “I will cherish the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown.” These backslidden preacher who preach more money than salvation have blinded the majority of the body of Christ. And are leading them to a wide road of death and destruction. But God will be glorified in the end!!!

Thats why I love to hear JSM. Where the truth is still preached, we had to leave our home church because of false doctrine being accepted and taught in sunday school. now we are visiting churches in our area, and never imagined how difficult it is to find a church with sound doctrine, where the cross is being preached, instead of watered down messages to tickle the ear. Thank God for your ministry ! It is a light in this world of darkness. You preach the only hope for man, Jesus and him crucified! we are so hoping to attend Easter campmeeting this year. PTL, I know it will be a blessing!

Thanks Brother Donnie for taking a stand for the Gospel and the Message of the Cross – It’s the only message that saves and sets men free!

Yes, My Brother in Christ, If not for calvary & The Lord”s Redemptive & Finished work Upon the Cross, there would be no Gospel. None of us can afford to abandon the Cross,Holiness living & Preaching. We have all sadly, most heart breakingly seen the results of abandoning these most precious & prominent Biblical Doctrines. Without them there is no salvation message & no Eternal hope. The world moves ever faster toward eternity & the Wrath of God’s Holy Judgement. Let The Church abandon modern & so called contemperary programs, repent & live Holy as He is Holy! Bless u brother Donnie.

I agree, we watch SBN all the time and very few other Christian programmes as most are wishy washy or downright wrong when you match what they are saying with the Word of God.
Keep giving us the pure Word of God, Donnie, Jimmy, Frances and Gabriel.

Hi! brother Donnie: I appreciate this Article so very much. The Gospel you and your dad, and other pastoral staff preach, is the only true gospel. There is no other way outside of “Jesus Christ, and Him Crucified.”

    Brother Donnie,
I just want to thank you for your no nonsense approach to preaching the Gospel. We need more preachers like you who stand up for the message of the cross and Christ crucified. The Church needs to wake up and get back to the basics as it were. Give me that Ol time religion. The fire and brimstone messages that are today replaced by a lot of Fluff! I do feel that your ministry is going to lead the way of revival it will be interesting to see just how many follow suit. I come from a non Pentecostal back ground, but after watching SBN and reading the Bible I am now seeking the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. You have one more convert to the truth ! God richly bless your ministry.

Yours in the blessed name of Christ Jesus,

    David MN

    Hello Brother Donnie,
I discovered the sonlife channel about the first of January, 2012. I did not know it was on the dish I have had for almost 10 years. I was so far removed from God I was making very ungodly comments about christians and especially television evangelist. Including your dad. About christmas time,2011, I had a sudden and almost mystical change of heart and mind. Without asking, without praying or any preaching it happened. I do not yet understand why. The answer is beginning to materalize slowly. The Holy Spirit within me finally, slowly and patiently woke me up.
I was saved in the year 1968. Very active church member for over 3 years. I bought a farm and moved. The pastor told me that after I moved I would slowly leave the church. I said you are wrong! He was right. The only time I had been inside a church since 1973 was to attend 2 funerals. Praise be to Jesus and the cross, I did not lose my salvation. I went thru hell on earth, but my heavenly reservation did not expire. I experienced 2 major heart attacks, died 4 times, according to the doctors. One time lasted 4 minutes. My television viewing since Jan. 1, 2012 has been at least 80 percent SONLIFE MINISTRIES. I am retired, 70 years old, and can watch 24/7 if I want to. I was taught everything concerning Jesus, the Holy Spirit and redemption that I hear on Sonlife. The cross is and always has been where my personal belief and salvation is anchored. The big difference, and what I missed, is the baptism of the Holy Spirit, or Holy Ghost. The church I attended didn’t teach that part. Thank God, what part of the holy spirit I did recieve, never left me. Suddenly I woke up. Now I thank God,Jesus and the Holy Spirit many times everyday for not leaving me. Perhaps I was kept alive in order to arrive at this important point before leaving this life. I have visited 5 different churches this year. None of them feeds my soul and mind like Sonlife. Jesus Christ, son of God, crucified on the cross, raised from the grave is the message I love to hear. Praise God!
Thank you very much for your ministry, and your TV station. I love every thing you air. God bless everyone of you in the Swaggert family.

  11. Karen says:

The new ‘religion’ is: what can God do for me, rather than, what can I do for God. Without the cross of Christ working in our hearts, we cannot experience the resurrection power. As Christ laid down his life, so must we in order to take up His. The cross and the resurrection are simultaneous in that we must die to self and the flesh. Christians want their cake and eat it too. They want their creature comforts and safe havens. “Itching ears” search out churches and sermons to appease their conscience, now seared.God bless you Donnie for giving it to us straight up, on the rock!! : )

  12. Dr Rocky Misner says:

Donnie Swaggart I watched your message on “The Philistines are running the Gov.” viewed on Fri. 5/4/12 @8:00pm. This is what every man of God needs to see and heed.
I have several pastors that I meet with every week and I want them to watch it Howcan I get a copy of this GREAT message?

  13. David says:

Pastor donnie thanks you for your sermon, allways I hear his sermons, but I would ask a favor, please can make a better interpretation into Spanish in the TV show, I have been blessed by the channel programming SONLIFE, but I think I will be more blessed if the translation is much better. May God bless you.

  14. Idorenyin Emah (I.D) says:

The message of the cross is a message of all times and everyone needs to hear this truth. Without the cross the would not be forgiveness of sins, deliverance and blessings of all kinds. It is really bad down here because you hardly go to a church where physical needs are not more emphasized than the victory we now have over these things through what Christ did at calvary. Most of the churches are watered down, currently i do not have a church i belong to, i go somewhere hear false messages, i am so tired of hearing junk and now i am only stuck on my sbn programs. Everybody around sees me as awkward, if this is all, i want to be more. Sbn is that one voice now crying out in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord!!

God bless you, all you do and sbn.
